The English Lake District

Contents

Introduction

These pages are a photographic tour of the spectacularly beautiful English Lake District. Set among the Cumbrian Mountains, the Lake District is home to the lakes that are the remnants of the last ice age, when Britain was buried under thousands of feet of ice. From Bassenthwaite Lake in the north to Windermere and Coniston Water to the south, the visitor is exposed to some of the most rugged and beautiful scenery in the land, as I hope these pictures confirm.

Northern Lakes

For most visitors the lakes are approached from the M6 motorway, the northern approach being via Penrith along the A66. From there one can turn south to visit Ullswater, Thirlmere, Derwent Water, Buttermere with Crummock Water and Ennerdale Water, or turn north to visit Bassenthwaite Lake.

Southern Lakes

The southern lakes, including Windermere and Coniston Water are also reached via the M6, with several optional routes to the individual lakes.
